Mini Bananas
I was taken aback when at the grocery I saw among all the regular bananas there were also all these mini bananas. Only those who know me well know that I love anything miniature! How cute, they are perfect proportional size for the boys : )

I wasn't about to dump them off on their first day. I stayed with them the whole time so I knew what their days would be like, and met with some of the teachers and volunteers. The boys, just like some of the fish in the sea, schooled at school. They were never too far from eachother : )
What!? You guys never told me you were capable of sitting at a table to eat your lunch. I'm so ready to ditch the high chairs now, on a search for toddler sized table and chairs!
In case you are wondering why this boy is eating with two utensils, one is from breakfast which he refused to let go.

Speech Delays in Multiples
I had all the boys tested by Early Intervention for any potential delays they may have. As I suspected they all indeed show a speech delay. They are just over the cut off but enough to qualify for some speech therapy. The ladies that evaluated the boys said I could have them tested again under a more controlled environment (meaning not at home and without their brothers there to distract them). I don't think I want them to score higher since then they may not qualify for speech therapy which I feel like they need (lets call it mom-tuition). Besides that's their learning environment, their brothers will always be there to distract them.
I've been more willing to accept that being bilingual was the cause to the delay but they didn't feel that is the case. They think it might be due to being multiples, which I've been less willing to accept because I don't want to believe that my boys are in anyway at a disadvantage just because they are triplets (this is one of the reasons I persevered so hard to breastfeed them). But statistics show 50% of all multiples (twins and more) have speech delays. It was explained that it could be due to life structure as a multiple (not enough variation and needs anticipated too quickly). For example putting your kid in a high chair for a family meal and forgetting to feed them, which could easily happen when you have one child but you'd never do that with three since most MOMs adhere to strict schedules/routines from the day our children are born. Perhaps the boys are too comfortable and don't feel they need to speak...hmmm...I guess overlooking a child's needs might be good for their development since it forces them to communicate?
Another possible reason:
• Multiples often engage in twin talk, a spoken language or a language of gestures and body language. Multiples are often so effective at communicating with each other that their speech and language development can be delayed. Taken from here
I have noticed that when one starts making a new noise/sound that the others pick it up quickly.
And of course the elephant in the room, there is only one of me and three of them! They are obviously not getting as much one on one attention as a singleton would. So it's finally caught up to us, at this stage in their development they simply need more than I can give? Other than Phil and I the boys see no other person on a regular basis that interacts with them, not even a big brother or sister (which they obviously don't have). They need more than just being in the midst of people like our typical hang outs that include meetings, indoor park, play house, park, etc. As the old adage goes, it takes a village to raise a child. So along with speech therapy I enrolled the boys in nursery school, where they will go once or twice (but hopefully twice) a week for 3.5hrs. It's a learning program and not just a place for them to play I'm hoping this provides some extra stimulation. They start this week and I'll give you more details later on. I'm still waiting on speech therapy to call me back so that we can meet and talk about a plan to get them caught up.
As their mother I must add that any deficiencies the boys have they make up for in shear cuteness (and climbing abilities)! I also think this is a window into their personalities, they will probably be shy (like me) and quiet (like dad) kids. I hope that means they won't be annoying, hehehe!

All of the boys know and use the sign for 'more' and 'gentle' appropriately. Eli is on the verge of learning 'all done' since he does the sign sometimes. I'm sure they all recognize the sign for 'book' and 'eat' but no one has done it on their own yet. I should probably queque up a couple more signs at this point I think.

Took the boys to a bluff near our house were they could run around, if we stay in the area long term I can imagine the boys riding their bikes here with Slurpee's in hand and having great times together exploring and doing who knows what boys do!

With all the nice weather we're having the boys skin is getting a little darker and their hair a little lighter, might have to start using sunblock and hats soon!
Eli easily ran a mile here, he followed the trails and just kept going!
I can officially say the boys have their first obsession(s). Most little boys are obsessed with balls or airplanes but with mine its sticks and utensils (forks and spoons)!

Hearing Tests
I was summoned to make an appointment for the boys to get routine hearing tests. I had heard none of this prior to that phone call so I asked several friends if they had to do hearing tests on their kidos but none had. So I took the boys in and apparently they knew triplets were coming because three ladies (docs and techs) all came out to get us and one says "ah man this is cuter than I thought it would be!" I asked why they needed the test and it turns out all babies ever admitted into the NICU are required to take periodic hearing tests. They passed their newborn one and the 18 month one with flying colors! The three ladies were in love with the boys and were bending over backwards to get the to smile and play with them. The doc in the room even said "moments like these are why I became a pediatrician." It's always nice to hear how much joy my children bring to this world! Have I ever mentioned how much I love having triplets? Well I guess I can't say it enough! Next one is scheduled for 5 years but I'm sure they'll pass that one as well. Their eyes, now that's a different story. I'm willing to bet they won't make it past 2nd grade before they need glasses (that's when I got my first pair) : )

Eli must have heard me talking about how he only had one molar and needed to catch up to his brothers because he cut two new molars. He's got a total of three now so the only one left to come out is his top right molar.
So there is this blog I follow about identical triplet grown up girls that document their travels among other things on their shared blog. I really enjoy their blog because it combines two of my favorite things identical triplets and traveling! I love hearing about how much they enjoy their sisters and how they talk every day even though they are married and live far away from each other. I also love that their plan is to eventually live in close proximity again someday. Their bond and love for each other is just that great. I hope my boys are as close as they are when they grow up. It would be great if I can keep them all together in one place that way I can have all my grandkids near me : ) But not before they travel the world like the traveling triplets or live abroad like their uncle Garret! They recently asked for questions from followers and couldn't help myself from throwing some their way. Shopping list (advice for expectant MOMs)
I recently had the privilege to meet (virtually) and offer some advice to an expectant id trip MOM, the sex of the babies is still unknown but can't wait to find out! I remember the overwhelming feeling as a new expecting parent of what to get and how much of each to get. So in retrospect here is my advice if you don't have a big house or a lot of money like us...
-ditch the triplet stroller, they are way too expensive, bulky, and you'll find that you don't use it much on top of getting way too much attention with it. Instead I'd get a good double stroller and good carrier (I recommend the ERGO, you can use it up to 40 lbs and is super comfortable). When the babies are a little older get either a joovy big caboose (12mo+) or a valco tri-mode (6mo+), these are much better triplet stroller alternatives that are more compact and affordable.
-Do get three boppy's, my boys spent most of their time in them from 0-3mo. I'd feed them, flip them over to burp them, and they'd nap in them.
-Bouncy chair vs swing...this one is tricky since most babies only like one or the other and never both. Maybe get one of each and when you figure out which one they like you can get two more. Mine loved the swings (full sized ones), and from 3-8months they napped in them all day long (I drew the line at night though and would put them in their cribs)...Fisher Price swings were die hard, the Graco's I had periodically wouldn't work before they finally bit the dust.
-Bottles: my goal was to breastfeed so I didn't want to get too many bottles but I knew that it takes preemies a while to learn how to take a full feeding from the breast. I got 6 4oz bottles and 6 9oz bottles. I just washed at every other feeding. It is a bit of work but it saved space and it was plenty of bottles once I was mostly breastfeeding via baby and not the pump! I love my Avent bottles because they are easy to clean and you can convert them to sippy cups and baby food storage containers. It saves money since the adaptors are much cheaper than buying a different set of sippy cups. The only thing is that many preemies are born with acid reflux and I hear the Dr. Brown bottles are much better for this but they are a pain to clean. So maybe keep all the packaging in tact and receipts just in case.
-My boys room is small and wanted them to be able to play in it when they got older. So we just got one crib where they all slept in it until about 3months and then we got two more pack n plays. This leaves enough room for them to have a separate play area than the living room which is a life saver when they get bored!
-Definitely get at least one activity mat. Ours was plenty big and we could put all three in it. As early as 2 months mine could easily spend 20-30 minutes under it. I loved our Baby Einstein Baby Neptune Ocean Adventure Gym
-3 Portable high chairs, the kind you can strap onto a regular chair. Saves space and money!
-Bumbo's are fun but not necessary, you can probably just use the high chairs to give babies the same experience. We had them but we could have done without.
-Bath seats, it's almost impossible to bathe three babies at once by your self! These seats actually make it possible and wish I had gotten them sooner. You can use them as soon as baby can sit up-right with support and you can use them as long as you want (I did till 19 months! great for story time). I recommend the Dreambaby Deluxe Bath Seat because they are small and if you have a regular sized bath tub you can fit all three in it.
-You can never have too many burp cloths and bibs (avoid ones with velcro attachment, they'll rip them off the minute they are capable and refuse to wear them, get the ones with snap buttons)
We love to hear from other parents of triplets, and identical triplets of course have a special place in our hearts. So don't be shy!

I finally let the boys try feeding themselves with spoons and bowls. Thankfully the bowls weren't immediately thrown over board like I was fearing. While they went through the motions correctly they didn't get a whole lot into their mouths. Eli did the best : )
The next day we tried forks and Thomas did such a good job! He was so proud and satisfied with himself. After lunch no one wanted to let go of their forks, they even took them to the meeting and the next day they took their baths with them. Silly kids! Now I'm slightly afraid to give them forks again since it's not the safest thing to walk around with...

Blast from the Past!
Phil and I's phones were on their death beds so we finally took all the pictures off them before they were lost forever. Check out these candid pics that we took when all that was available was our crappy phone cameras to document the special moments that wouldn't last or when we couldn't find our real camera...enjoy!

Check Ups (oh crap! #19&20)
18 month well child check up
not the most interesting video, just the boys running around at the doc's office being silly
The boys got a clean bill of health as usual; however, they were weighed two weeks ago and they seem to have lost weight? I'm not sure what to think since their appetites have been normal. But they were weighed on two different scales at two different places and in one they were weighed with a dry diaper and the other naked. Anyways, make what you will of it, but I'm not worried. At both places they show lovely normal growth curves and that's what really counts. For height and weight the boys are barely hanging on in the 1-5th percentile for their age. If they were in the 50th percentile they'd be more like 12mo olds, so these guys even for their not to be mentioned again 'adjusted age' are truly tinie tiny petite! BMI's are perfect though, not too chubby and not too skinny. Interestingly enough their heads are all in the 60-50th percentiles for their age!!! I've never paid much attention to head circumference but this time I actually bothered to look, so I guess you can't say they have small brains : ) These guys have big heads! Just the other day I met a 19month old who's height/weight was in the 80th percentile but his head was only in the 30th percentile, this just goes to show how kids (and adults) come in all different shapes and sizes : )

Can you believe these guys are 5 times bigger then when they were born! How many full term babies can say that by 18 months? Never underestimate a preemie, they are strong little dudes! Sometimes I feel like the boys are growing at a snails pace but considering they were all born at just over 4lbs and 17inches long they really have come a long way. Which reminds me that we are walking again this year in the March of Dimes walk so if you are so inclined to throw down a couple of bucks for a good cause here is a link to our team page!
More Baby Updates
We took the boys to a coffee shop the other day and there was a dad and his son in the little kids play area. When he saw the boys the first thing he said to me was "that's the cutest thing I've ever seen in my whole life!" Of course you can imagine all the many questions he had for us after that : )
What is it about high chairs that makes kids not want to eat? I'm pretty sure they were invented by MOMs because I totally understand why so many parents of singletons ditch the high chairs (there is no way I could do that). These guys have ferocious appetites whenever they see me eating something or when I feed them from my lap. We do breakfast every morning while they play but that's all my floors can handle for now.
The boys doc gave me the ok to stop giving the boys vitamins with iron since the boys eat plenty of beans and meat. That stuff is so nasty and am glad to be rid of it. So now I'm on the search for a good toddler vitamin to make sure no one becomes deficient in anything.
I'm a little surprised the boys don't weigh more than they do considering how much they poop! It's not uncommon for these guys to go 4 times in one day. I'm pretty sure they are no where near potty training right now but I'm still hopeful for sometime shortly after two (please please please). One of the most frustrating things for me is when everyone decides to poop right before we are ready to leave somewhere. I just want to throw in the towel and stay home on those occasions (but I never do). Lately, when ever I ask the boys if they have a poopy Caleb gives me a funny guilty smile when he does! That's a good sign I think...
Whenever we get breaks from the rain the boys and I have been going to the back yard. The boys work hard back there collecting sticks and running around. They do so well out there besides the occasional 'I can't get up, please help mom!' I have been able to put some serious hurt on our invasive black berry bushes! I really love gardening so I'm pretty sure I can get my yard looking super by the start of summer : )
Caleb and Thomas now have 4 molars, one on each side and top and bottom. Eli has some catching up to do since he still only has one!

In case you aren't around small children these days but Thomas the Train is all the rage right now. I can't help but be totally sold on it and I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that I have a son named Thomas and that I used to watch it myself back when they had Ringo Star in it. The funny thing is that the boys (but especially Thomas) really love TtT stuff and the cartoon. I wonder how many little boys would change their names to Thomas if they had the chance?

Look who fit's into their 2T rain jackets, just in time for a rainy but warmer spring! I think it's safe to put away the heavy coats and mittens now : )
Cream Cheese face: this is why I have a hard time keeping weight ON! How much of my bagel with cream cheese did I actually eat? Just ask Caleb and the other two hyenas!
You wouldn't know it from this tug of war but the boys have been sharing a lot better these days. They actually give a toy back sometimes if their brother makes a big enough fuss! But not this time.
